Artist workshop: The Art of NOTAN

Bibliothèque Baie-D'Urfé Library

Event description

Notan is the underlying abstract framework of dark and light values, which the artist uses to build the value structure of a painting. Expressed as an arrangement of darks, lights, and gray shapes, the term ‘Notan’ literally means “concentrated/weak.” Whether in abstract or realist style, a preliminary Notan sketch helps the artist to assess the strength of their composition and adjust if necessary. Notan studies help to simplify complex scenes, design stronger shapes, and bring clarity to the composition. The workshop is offered by Art Appreciation Series facilitator Bonnie Taylor and will cover principles, practical tips, and creative exercises. All supplies are provided. Level is intermediate, most suitable for those over 16. Admission is free, but registration is required.
